Bloomed: Tulip
A member of the lily family, the tulip is a brightly coloured flower whose buds are known for being almost perfectly symmetrical. Regarded as the unofficial flower of the Netherlands, tulips are said to signal the arrival of spring. Originally cultivated in the 13th century, they were introduced to the Dutch by Turkish traders. Growing in value, they were once deemed the most expensive flower, resulting in the bulbs being traded for currency.
The tulip is perhaps one of the most surreal flower studies within the Bloomed artwork series. At any given point, the tulips look entirely different. However, in response to the viewer's motion, the blossoms exhibit a romanticised movement in which they seem to interplay with one another as a result of receiving attention.
